LG Polls postal voting postponed

Postal voting for the Local Government (LG) elections has been postponed indefinitely.

The National Election Commission said that postal voting has been postponed as the Government printer has not printed the ballot papers owing to lack of funds.

The Government printer had said earlier that it will not be able to print the ballot papers as the Treasury has not released the required funds for this purpose.

Postal voting for the 2023 Local Government election was to be held on 22, 23 and 24 February.

Gazette notices had been issued confirming the holding of Local Government elections in the respective local authorities on 9th March.

The Government has already said that there will be difficulties in funding the elections owing to the economic crisis.

However, the National Election Commission accepted nominations for the polls and decided to go ahead with the election, as scheduled. (Colombo Gazette)
