Police fire tear gas and water on protest at Union Place

The Police fired tear gas and water on a protest at Union Place this afternoon.
The protest was organized by the Inter-University Student’s Federation (IUSF).
A number of those who were involved in the protest at Galle Face also took part in the protest march.
The protesters demanded the release of all those involved in the demonstrations against the Government.
They also protested against President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The Police issued an order at the time of the protest at Union Place for the demonstrators to withdraw and not cause any public disturbance.
The protesters. however, disregarded the Police order and continued with the protest.
The riot Police and Special Task Force moved in and blocked the protesters from heading towards Fort.
Tear gas and water cannons were fired to push the protesters back.
The Police also baton charged the protesters and forced them to head towards the Borella junction. (Colombo Gazette)
