Two Sri Lankans arrested in Chennai on robbery charges

The Police at the Chennai airport have arrested two Sri Lankan nationals who allegedly robbed gold jewellery from a Sri Lankan passenger after posing as Customs officers.

The Police said Nadhisha Roshini, 47, flew in from Sri Lanka on Monday. The two accused, who were identified as Mohammed Najmin, 31, and Chelliah Aravindhan, 40, both Sri Lankan nationals, stopped her outside the airport and introduced themselves as Customs officers, The Hindu reported.

The duo told her that she was carrying jewellery beyond the permitted limit and took her necklace and bangles.

Suspecting them, she went to Customs and complained about them. Later, she lodged a police complaint. The duo were arrested and remanded to judicial custody. (Colombo Gazette)

Soldier killed, two injured in Nugegoda accident

A soldier was killed and another two soldiers sustained injuries in a road accident in Nugegoda this morning. The Police said that a private bus had crashed into a Sri Lanka Army vehicle on the Nugegoda flyover. New unit under CID to probe illegally acquired assets

A new unit is to be established under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate illegally acquired assets. Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Deshabandu Tennakoon said the new unit will be established over the next few days.
