Rev. Fr. Jeewantha Peris files FR petition

A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition has been filed with the Supreme Court seeking an order to prevent the arrest of Rev. Fr. Jeewantha Peris.

The petition names?Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province, Deshabandu Thennakoon, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the commanders of tri-forces, the Attorney General.

The Catholic priest plays a leading role in the protest at Galle Face.

However, the priest says there is an attempt to arrest him on false allegations.

The Police have already begun to arrest several leading activists involved in the protests. (Colombo Gazette)

Police deny torture claims, slam Kondaya’s lawyers

The police today denied claims of widespread torture in the police service and also questioned the motives behind the campaign?by lawyers appearing for Dunesh Priyashantha, alias Kondaya, who was acquitted in the murder of a five year old child recently.
