President says IMF deal will not resolve Sri Lanka’s problems

President Ranil Wickremesinghe says an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will not fully resolve Sri Lanka’s issues.

He said that Sri Lanka needs to look at ways of paying back its loans.

Speaking in Kandy today, the President said that the protests had delayed a possible deal with the IMF.

He said that talks were progressing with the IMF after he assumed duties as Prime Minister.

However, he said that the negotiations stalled as a result of the instability over the past few weeks.

Wickremesinghe said that a deal is now likely only after the end of August.

The President also said that other countries are not willing to offer financial assistance until a deal is reached with the IMF.

Speaking further, the President said that an agreement with the IMF will not fully resolve the issues faced by Sri Lanka.

The President said that Sri Lanka needs to find ways to repay its loans.

Wickremesinghe said that there is no point in wasting time blaming former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa or anyone else for the crisis.

Instead, he said that political parties must work together on finding permanent solutions to the issues faced by Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)
