Parliament approves State of Emergency

Parliament approved the State of Emergency with 120 MPs voting for and 63 against it.

Former Ministers, Professor G.L Peiris and Dullas Alahapperuma were among those who voted against the State of Emergency.

The vote was taken when Parliament convened today.

Parliament convened today to debate the proclamation on the State of Emergency declared by the Acting President under the Public Security Ordinance is to be approved after the debate.

This proclamation was made by the then Acting President through the Special Gazette No. 2288/30 dated July 17, 2022 and according to the legal provisions, if the approval of the Parliament is not obtained within 14 days for the said proclamation, it will be cancelled.

The gazette had been issued in accordance with the powers vested in the President in terms of the Public Security Ordinance to ensure public security and the protection of the public order and the maintenance supplies and services essential to the life of community. (Colombo Gazette)

Bondholders and Sri Lanka fail to agree on restructuring terms

Sri Lanka has failed to strike an agreement on restructuring about US$12 billion of debt with its bondholders, the Government said on Tuesday (Apr 16). ?The steering committee did not agree to extension of restricted discussions,? it said in a regulatory filing.
