No move to enforce 12-hour power cuts

Cabinet has been informed that there is no move to enforce 12-hour power cuts, despite the fuel crisis, Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said today.

He said that Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera had informed the Cabinet yesterday that the authorities will manage the fuel stocks and ensure the power cuts are limited to around 3 hours.

Gunawardena also appealed to the public to use fuel sparingly owing to the existing shortage in the country.

“Due to Forex issues, Fuel imports has to be restricted in the next 12 months. CPC has never distributed fuel daily to every single fuel station. Practically not possible even when stocks are unlimited,? Kanchana Wijesekera had tweeted earlier.

Wijesekera had also said that the last digit number system for fuel is to be scrapped from 1st of August and only the fuel pass will be used.

The Minister said that the national fuel pass will be implemented around the island from today (Tuesday 26th July) at multiple CEYPETCO and LIOC fuel stations. The system will be in place with the last digit of the number plate until the 1st of August. (Colombo Gazette)
