G. L. Peiris dropped from new Cabinet

Professor G.L. Peiris has been dropped from the new Cabinet appointed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Ali Sabry has been appointed as the new Foreign Minister, replacing Peiris.

The move comes after Peiris had questioned the decision taken by his party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), to nominate Wickremesinghe as President.

The Cabinet of Ministers of the new interim government is as follows:

1. PM Dinesh Gunawardena ? Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils & Local Government

2. Douglas Devananda ? Minister of Fisheries

3. Susil Premajayantha ? Minister of Education

4. Bandula Gunawardena ? Minister of Transport, Highways & Media

TRCSL says no move to block internet access

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) says there is no move to block access to the internet tomorrow (Saturday). A letter reportedly issued by the TRCSL was circulating on social media claiming service providers were told to allow only voice calls tomorrow. The letter claimed the order was issued on a request made by the defence authorities. However, TRCSL said that no such directive has been issued. (Colombo Gazette)

BASL says curfew blatantly illegal

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) says the Police curfew imposed today is “blatantly illegal”. The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has also directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to withdraw the curfew. The HRCSL has observed that the State, after having failed to obtain a court order to prevent the protest march is now attempting to curtail the march by illegal means. LP Gas declared an essential item

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LP Gas) has been declared an essential item. The Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security Naleen Fernando has issued a gazette notice declaring LP Gas an essential item. The gazette states that the Minister is of the opinion that LP Gas is essential to the life of the community having consulted the Consumer Affairs Authority.
