BASL slams “unnecessary use” of brute force

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) today slammed the “unnecessary use” of brute force at the Galle Face protest site.

BASL President Saliya Pieris said that several lawyers had informed him of the attack on protestors at the Galle Face near the Presidential Secretariat.

“Whilst the details are sketchy, I am also told that several people including Nuwan Bopege AAL have been arrested. I am also been told of people having been assaulted,” he said in a brief message, early morning.

The BASL President said that the authorities must ensure the safety of everyone and their whereabouts must be made known.

“I have tried to contact the IGP and also messaged the Army Commander. Unnecessary use of brute force will not help this country and its international image,” he said.

The military launched a pre-dawn raid on the Galle Face protest site today, just minutes after the protesters announced that they will be withdrawing from the Presidential Secretariat.

Hundreds of troops surrounded Galle Face at approximately 1am (Friday) and stormed the Presidential Secretariat and removed the protesters.

The Police and military also destroyed tents and other structures erected around the Presidential Secretariat. (Colombo Gazette)

Sanath Jayasuriya gets cricket consultant role at SLC
