Sajith attempts to persuade opposing MPs to back him

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says he is “campaigning hard” to win the support of MPs who oppose him, ahead of the presidential election.

Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, National Peoples Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and former Minister Dullas Alahapperuma have so far announced that they will be contesting the election.

“Campaigning hard to try and persuade the MPs opposed to us to vote with us. Tough going since it is the @GotabayaR majority. Tried explaining to them the futility of continuing to support Rajapaksa?s corrupt and crony politics,” Premadasa tweeted.

Nominations will be called on the 19th Tuesday and subsequently, a member of parliament will be elected for the presidency after the election held in Parliament on the 20th, Wednesday.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided not to vote at the election in Parliament but will support the President who is eventually elected.?(Colombo Gazette)
