SLPP Chairman questions General Secretary on backing Ranil

The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Prof. G.L Peiris has demanded an explanation from SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam on his announcement that the SLPP will back Ranil Wickremesinghe for President at the election next week.

In a letter to Kariyawasam the SLPP Chairman said that he was “amazed” and in total disbelief by Kariyawasam’s statement.

Kariyawasam had told reporters that the SLPP had decided to vote in support of Wickremesinghe for President.

Prof. G.L Peiris asked under what authority such a statement was made.

He also asked who attended the said meeting where the decision to back Wickremesinghe was taken.

Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, National Peoples Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and former Minister Dullas Alahapperuma have so far announced that they will be contesting the election. (Colombo Gazette)
