President sends resignation letter

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has sent in his resignation letter to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

The letter has been sent by email by the President, who is currently in Singapore.

The letter will be authenticated before a formal announcement is made.

According to reports, the original letter is to be flown to Sri Lanka from Singapore.

With his resignation Ranil Wickremesinghe will be President.?Wickremesinghe is currently the Acting President.

He has requested the Speaker to call on party leaders to name a new Prime Minister through consensus.

Rajapaksa sent his letter after reaching Singapore from the Maldives.

He was scheduled to send his letter yesterday (Saturday) but had delayed it till he reached Singapore.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled Sri Lanka following massive protests which led to his official residence in Fort being stormed by protesters. (Colombo Gazette)

Abducted child rescued in Ampara, suspect arrested

By Farook Sihan A child who was abducted from her house in Ampara has been rescued from a suspect said to be a relative of the child. Schools to resume academic activities of all grades next month

Government schools will resume academic activities of all grades next month, the Education Ministry said today. The Education Ministry said that grade 06 ? 13 of all government schools will resume academic activities on 2nd September. Classes will be conducted 7.30 am and 1.30 pm, the Education Ministry said.
