BASL says curfew blatantly illegal

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) says the Police curfew imposed today is “blatantly illegal”.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has also directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to withdraw the curfew.

The HRCSL has observed that the State, after having failed to obtain a court order to prevent the protest march is now attempting to curtail the march by illegal means.

Issuing a statement, the BASL said that the Police Ordinance does not have a provision for the imposition of such curfew.

The BASL said the curfew is blatantly illegal and a violation of the fundamental rights of the people of our country who are protesting against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his government over its failure to protest their basic rights.

The BASL questioned the Inspector-General of Police as to under what authority he declared the curfew order. (Colombo Gazette)
