Demonstrators near side gate of Presidential Secretariat arrested

A number of demonstrators were arrested near the side gate of the Presidential Secretariat today.

Protesters had earlier blocked some of the remaining access to the Presidential Secretariat in Fort, which also houses the Finance Ministry.

Tents were erected near the side gates of the Presidential Secretariat since late last night.

The Police and the military had been deployed to strengthen security at the side gates of the building.

Subsequently, they began arresting some protesters who were blocking the gate.

The Army had also closed part of Lotus Road before they withdrew and the road was opened.

The 21 demonstrators who were arrested were later released on bail.

The front entrance of the building is already blocked with protesters occupying the area since 9th April. (Colombo Gazette)

Fuel train crashes into elephants killing five

A train transporting fuel crashed into a herd of elephants killing five elephants along the Batticaloa railway line today. The accident took place between Habarana and Palugaswewa on the Batticaloa line. The elephants had been crossing the railway line when the train crashed into them. The train derailed following the impact and some of the fuel tanks had overturned. The train had been transporting fuel from Colombo to Batticaloa when the accident took place.
