IMF wants Sri Lanka to restore debt sustainability

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Sri Lanka needs to restore debt sustainability before an agreement on a financing program can be reached.
IMF Director of Communications Gerry Rice said that the IMF is planning an in-person mission to Sri Lanka in the coming weeks.
He said that a staff level agreement with Sri Lanka will depend on the policies the Government will propose.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had talks recently with the Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, regarding the current economic situation in the country.
The Prime Minister requested that the staff-level delegation from the IMF visit Sri Lanka as soon as possible so that the staff-level agreement could be finalised.
Gerry Rice said that Georgieva had reaffirmed the commitment of the IMF to assist Sri Lanka at this difficult time.
“We are very concerned about the situation. The food and energy crisis and their impact on the Sri Lankan people,” he said.
He said it is too early to discuss the magnitude of any IMF assistance and when an agreement might be reached. (Colombo Gazette)
