Soldier who was part of MP’s security unit dies by suicide

A soldier who was part of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP M.A. Sumanthiran’s security unit has died by suicide.
The Police said that the soldier died by allegedly shooting himself using his own weapon.
He was found dead in a shelter on land near Sumanthiran’s residence.
The victim is a 22-year-old resident of Walapane.
Meanwhile, MP Sumanthiran said that on a request by Government parliamentarians, army security was provided for all parliamentarians after the incidents on the 9th of May.
“I called the officer concerned, Lt. Col. Gunatilleke and informed him that I did not want that security and that guard was promptly removed,” the MP said.
Thereafter, he found that the unit had moved down the lane well away from his house.
He said that since similar guards were present at various street corners, he did not consider it his security.
The MP said that this morning he heard the very unfortunate news that one of those soldiers had committed suicide. (Colombo Gazette)
