Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake further remanded

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarians, Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake, were today ordered to be further remanded till 1st June over the attack on peaceful demonstrators near Temple Trees and Galle Face.

The two MPs were arrested and remanded till today (25th May) after being accused of being involved in the 9th May mob attack on the peaceful demonstrators.

The mob had launched the attack on the demonstrators after attending a meeting at Temple Trees with then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Attorney General (AG) had directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest the suspects, including Members of Parliament (MP), accused of being involved in the mob violence on 9th May.

The AG has told the IGP to arrest the MPs, including former Minister Johnston Fernando, if there is sufficient evidence against them.

Among the suspects named by the AG are MPs Johnston Fernando, Sanath Nishantha, Sanjeeva Edirimanne and Milan Jayatilleke as well as Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province, Deshabandu Tennakoon and Dan Priyasad.?(Colombo Gazette)

Freed 37 Indian fishermen sent back

A group of Indian fishermen who were set free yesterday, were handed over to the coast guard today. The coast guard said that the 37 Indian fishermen were to be handed over to the Indian coast guard today. The Indians were freed following talks President Maithripala Sirisena had with a group of Indian fishermen last week. Sirisena had told the Indians he wants the fishermen issue between India and Sri Lanka to be resolved through negotiations. (Colombo Gazette)
