MPs seek hotel accommodation from Speaker

Some Members of Parliament (MP) have sought hotel accommodation from Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena owing to the fuel crisis.

The Speaker told Parliament today that some MPs wanted to return home soon and required fuel.

“Otherwise they asked me to book a hotel for them to stay here,” the Speaker said.

Some MPs from out of Colombo have already taken to social media saying they require fuel to return home after attending Parliament sessions.

A heated exchange took place in Parliament today over reports that MPs are being provided fuel at a subsidized rate.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe insisted that fuel is not given at a subsidized rate to MPs.?(Colombo Gazette)

Coronavirus death toll in Sri Lanka reaches 40

The death toll due to the coronavirus in Sri Lanka has increased to 40. The Ministry of Health today reported the deaths of four more Covid patients from Rajagiriya, and the Colombo and Gampaha districts.
