UN calls for dialogue in Sri Lanka to resolve crisis

The United Nations has called for dialogue in Sri Lanka to resolve the crisis following the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.?
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General said that the UN has taken note of the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
“We continue to encourage all Sri Lankan stakeholders to find a solution to the current challenges through dialogue and with the interests of the country and the people in mind,” he said.
At the same time, he said the UN is also concerned about the recent violence against peaceful protesters.
The UN urged for calm and restraint, as well as respect for democratic rights, including the right to freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly.
Rajapaksa tendered his resignation letter yesterday.
His resignation came after his supporters attacked peaceful protesters at Galle Face.
In his resignation letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the outgoing Prime Minister said that he was resigning to make way for a new Cabinet to take over.
The current Cabinet stands dissolved with the resignation of the Prime Minister.?(Colombo Gazette)
