Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa left Temple Trees early this morning, under tight security.
Mobs had surrounded Temple Trees last night and attempted to break-in.
However, the Police fired tear gas while the security forces fired in the air and prevented mobs from moving in.
Rajapaksa tendered his resignation letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday.
The resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister was later gazetted.
The gazette noted that Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned from the Office of Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka under article 47(2)(b) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, with effect from May 09, 2022.
His resignation came after his supporters attacked peaceful protesters at Galle Face. (Colombo Gazette)
