Ranil calls for a new political system

Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has called for a new political system.

Speaking during a meeting with young professionals at Sirikotha, Wickremesinghe said that alongside a system change a new political system must also be adopted.

He said that not just the question of the Executive Presidency but the entire representative system should be addressed.

How many political parties should be there, how should the voting system operate, do we follow the preferential voting mechanism or a new cost effective system of voting.

The former Prime Minister explained that the cost of the political establishment must also be addressed. How can we include more young people in politics.

He said that the Sri Lankan society must be brought forward to the 21st century with the system change. Our education and workforce must all adapt to the changes so that we can see a rise once again in the middle class in the country.

At the time of Independence Sri Lanka was on par with Japan, we have now fallen to the below Afghanistan. In 2048 the country will celebrate 100 years of Independence, by then we must have reached our  potential.

To achieve this we must bring forth a new iron framework for a national policy. That will allow for Governments to change at times but the direction of the country will not. Countries such as India and Japan operate in this manner.

He also explained that the country has less than US $25 million dollars. While due to the tax cuts imposed by the Government the country lost Rs. 800 billion in revenue and is now facing a Rs. shortage.

“We are now unable to pay back our debt. So we must first enact a debt repayment structure”, he stated. Wickremesinghe added that the Government must cut out unnecessary expenditure and provide what relief then can to the masses, while explaining that the costs of items such a fuel will increase if the Government is to increase their revenue.

He warned that our banks were facing the possibility of collapse due to the outstanding loans taken by the Government. He said these issues can be resolved within a year or two at the most.

Once the immediate economic crisis is resolved, he said that we must look to the future. If that is to be done, then the entire process must be changed including the political process and the economic process. He explained that the political system in the country has lost the confidence of the people, and the protests have evolved from Go Home Gota, to Go Home Rajapaksa to Go Home all Politicians. This is due to Parliament failing to provide solutions to the crisis.

He said that steps are underway to begin the process of stabilizing the economy. The first step is to bring the control of public finances back under Parliament through the introduction of new Parliamentary committees. He said these committees can then engage with the youth and see their recommendations implemented.

Through doing this Wickremesinghe said that new leaders in the country will emerge alongside the new economy. He also said the political crisis regarding the President and Prime Minister, the constitutional amendments, the questions over the No Confidence Motions all will have to be addressed.

He said all these issues have to be resolved by everyone working together. They cannot be addressed by individuals, the public must also get involved. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Surely, Sri Lanka needs a new system, a system that hang foolish politicians and others who brought the country backward since independence, including Ranil, Chanthirika, My3, Mahinda, Gota etc.

The leaders didn’t fall from the sky, they came from the community. Clearly, Sri Lankans are not politically informed. The majority are there to undermine minority intellectuals.

Sri Lanka has no chance, until it finds a way to protect its intellectuals and punish the perpetrators, including foolish politicians and the others.

Let me tell you my personal story. I have four siblings. Three of them didn’t pass high school. Only one brother has more than a high school qualification but he qualified as a Catholic priest.

For me, his qualification does not count because he doesn’t earn as a Catholic priest and does nothing to help the county’s GDP. Basically, he is in a similar situation as Buddhist monks.

My sister didn’t pass GCE O/L. Last 30 years I tried my best to push her to study an educational course to enhance her knowledge to help the community, but she refused. I have asked to get a job, she refused. She even refused to do voluntary work. She lives in Jaffna to undermine people like me to impose western interests.

Two brothers live in Canada and they both didn’t pass high school. One of them never had a job in Canada but always has money. I believe that the Canadian Government is using him to undermine people like me, so the West can use Tamil diaspora to achieve western interests.

Three of my siblings never had a job. But they are firm followers of western powers. They have done more damage to Sri Lanka by supporting the West and the LTTE. than doing good.

We have a few coconut trees in my patents’ property in Jaffna. Those coconut trees have been helpful and valuable to the community than 3 of siblings. This shows why Sri Lanka is bankrupt.

Sri Lanka needs a new system to clean the country, otherwise it has no hope. I don’t believe that Sri Lanka is wise and courage enough to bring a new system to get rid of useless politicians and others.

If I become a president I would fix the country within 6 months. I would hang 2/3 of of you under corruption, laziness, and aiding the foreign powers.

Let’s talk about the reality, nobody would govern the country as I mentioned above. So, prepare for more sufferings, because you have leaders, journalists, police and customs officers and others are curse to the country than a blessing.

Sajith, Ranil or Maithri could be brought in as Prime Minister but no one can solve the problems, because it has gone beyond repairable stage.

To get votes the leaders have been pampering people by allowing whatever they want. The leaders let the people indulging their laziness in the name of religion, government servants working only a few hours a day, teachers teach as little as possible at school to earn extra cash from tuition classes. Police and customs officers take bribes. Buddhist monks have a lot to say about governing the country but they don’t earn even one rupee. Eventually, all the people will turn against the leaders. It is like spoiled kids ending up in hunting or killing their own parents, because parents didn’t discipline the kids to become successful.

  2. This guy is a major part of the problem. He never thought of voicing such views when in power and able to act upon them. He too must be banished for the politics of this country.
