Protesters threaten journalist for taking video of incident

A group of protesters threatened a journalist at Slave Island today and forced him to delete a video he had taken of two vehicles being attacked.
The incident had taken place when some residents had closed the roads at the Slave Island junction demanding gas.
A confrontation had taken place between some of the residents and motorists who had requested that the road be opened.
The motorists had said that they were returning from Galle Face after attending a protest and requested that they be allowed to pass through.
However, the residents refused to open the road, resulting in a heated exchange of words.
The situation got tense and some men began to attack two vehicles using helmets and other objects.
The motorists then reversed and withdrew from the area.
The entire incident was captured on video by Daily Mirror journalist Easwaran Rutnam who was at the location at the time.
A group of youth surrounded the journalist and demanded that he delete the video.
They had also placed their hands on the phone in an attempt to look for the video.
The journalist had objected to the men touching his phone and deleted the video after they threatened him.
The men later warned the journalist of consequences if the video is published on Daily Mirror.
They had even taken photographs of his media card hanging around his neck.
A few others later apologised to the journalist over the incident. (Colombo Gazette)
