Mass protests take place around the country

Mass protests took place around the country today even as most key operations shut down in support of an islandwide hartal.
Protests took place in Colombo, Negombo, Hatton and other parts of the country.
People took to the streets demanding an immediate solution to the current economic crisis.
The protesters also called for the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The Police today warned of legal action on protesters engaging in violence during the hartal today.
Police Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana said that the public have a right to protest peacefully.
He said that a number of protests have been scheduled in Colombo and other cities around the country.
DIG Ajith Rohana said that anyone can protest peacefully under the Constitution.
He noted that the Constitution protects the right to freedom of expression.
The Police have been informed to protect that right, DIG Ajith Rohana said.
However, he said that if anyone engages in violence then the Police will be forced to enforce the law.?(Colombo Gazette)
