Sajith cautions protesters on hidden agenda of some MPs

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today cautioned protesters on the hidden agenda of some MPs who had voted for Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Ranjith Siyambalapitiya as Deputy Speaker.

Premadasa said that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) was to back Siyambalapitiya but later reversed its decision after the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) decided to also support the SLFP MP.

He told Parliament the hidden agenda of the MPs who’s actions did not match their words has now been exposed.

A group of independent MPs who spoke against the Government had today backed Siyambalapitiya’s election as Deputy Speaker.

Siyambalapitiya was re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament today following a secret vote.

He was elected to the post after the Parliament was split on who should be the new Deputy Speaker.

The SLFP had proposed Siyambalapitiya and the proposal was backed by the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.

However, the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya proposed MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar to the post.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced a vote following which Siyambalapitiya received 148 votes and Bakeer Markar 65 votes.

Siyambalapitiya had resigned from the post last month.?(Colombo Gazette)
