Former Kegalle SSP remanded over Rambukkana shooting incident

Former Kegalle Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) K.B. Keerthiratne has been remanded over the Rambukkana shooting incident.

He was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday over the shooting incident.

The Kegalle Magistrate?s Court ordered that he be remanded until the 6th of May.

Meanwhile, three Police constables who were also arrested in connection with the Rambukkana shooting incident, were ordered yo be remanded until the 13th of May.

The Police?opened fire?on a group of protesters in Rambukkana killing one person and injuring a number of others.

Police Spokesman, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nihal Thalduwa had said that the Police had opened fire after initially using tear gas.

He said that the Police had opened fire when the protesters had allegedly attempted to set fire to the fuel truck.

According to the Police, the protesters had blocked the railway track and protested in the area for several hours.

The Police had advised the protesters to cleat the tracks but the request was rejected.

According to the Police, the protesters had then set fire to a three-wheeler and attempted to set fire to the fuel truck.

The Police had opened fire on the protesters killing Chaminda Lakshan and injuring at least 24 others.

The Police media unit said that a number of policemen were also injured in the incident.

The Police Special Task Force (STF) was later deployed to the area to try and control the situation.?(Colombo Gazette)?

Fishermen death toll rises to 40

The death toll from the storm has risen to 40 fishermen dead and several still missing, the Disaster Management Center said this afternoon. DMC spokesman Sarath Lal said that the bodies of the 40 fishermen have been recovered and search and rescue operations are underway to locate those missing.
