Rohit Sharma named India Test captain

Rohit Sharma has been named captain of the Indian men’s Test cricket team following Virat Kohli’s exit.

The 34-year-old has been a regular since he opened the batting for the Test side in October 2019.

Rohit had already replaced Kohli as captain of the white-ball sides and he will now lead the Test team in their two-match series against Sri Lanka.

“Rohit is the number one cricketer of our country,” said chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma.

Kohli quit as India’s Test captain in January having resigned from the T20 leadership last year and then been sacked as ODI skipper.

Rohit has scored 3,047 runs including eight centuries in 43 Tests since making his debut in 2013. (BBC)

England beat New Zealand to line up Australia semi-final

Defending champions England will face 2018 runners-up Australia in Saturday’s Commonwealth netball semi-final after a superb victory against New Zealand at a jubilant NEC Arena. The hosts rose to their toughest challenge of the Games so far, beating the world champions 54-44. England finish top of pool B and face Australia at 14:30 BST on Saturday after the Diamonds lost to Jamaica. New Zealand drew level at 25-25 at one point but the Roses pulled away to win. Yupun qualifies for men?s 100 meters semi finals at Commonwealth Games

Sri Lanka?s Yupun Abeykoon qualified for the men?s 100 meters semi finals at the Commonwealth Games. He was placed first in heat 06 of the first round of the 100 meters men?s event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games being held in Birmingham. Abeykoon finished first with a time of 10.06 seconds to qualify for the semi-finals scheduled to be held tomorrow (Wednesday). (Colombo Gazette)
