More than 300 former Tigers freed

The army yesterday released more than 300 former LTTE cadres who had undergone rehabilitation. The former rebels were freed and handed over to their relatives at a ceremony held in Vavuniya yesterday to mark the ‘Thai Pongal’ festival. Tamil media reports from Jaffna said that several former female LTTE cadres were among those released. The Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera and top Military officials attended the function.

MR to sack Shirani

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will remove Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake within the next few days, a presidential spokesman said. Weather death toll nearing 50

The death toll from the extreme weather conditions?experienced?in the country for nearly a month is nearing 50. As of yesterday the death toll had risen to 46, the Disaster Management Center (DMC)?said. The DMC also said that 8 people are still missing following the heavy rain, floods and landslides. Thousands had been affected by the bad weather and hundreds were forced out of their homes. The DMC said that just over 5000 people are still in evacuation centers around the country. (Colombo Gazet
