Petition filed against Trincomalee oil tank farm deal

A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition has been filed against the Trincomalee oil tank farm deal.

The petition was filed in the Supreme Court by the Secretary of the National Bhikkhu Front, the Venerable Wakmulle Uditha Thera.

A petitioner has cited 47 people as respondents, including the Attorney General, the Cabinet, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Lanka IOC and the Defence Secretary.

In the petition, the Venerable Wakmulle Uditha Thera says the Cabinet has no right to approve such a deal.

India and Sri Lanka yesterday (Thursday) signed the agreement to develop the Trincomalee oil tank farm.

The agreement was signed between the Treasury Secretary, the Commissioner General of Lands, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), Lanka Indian Oil and Trinco Petroleum Terminal Pvt. Ltd.

The Cabinet had this week approved the proposal for Sri Lanka to sign the agreement with India on the Trincomalee oil farm.

After reviewing the three existing agreements with the Government of India regarding the Trincomalee oil tank farm, the two countries reached an agreement to implement a joint development project.

A subsidiary has already been formed under the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation to develop the Trincomalee oil tank farm. The subsidiary has been named the Trinco Petroleum Terminal Ltd.?(Colombo Gazette)
