Sri Lanka to import 20,000 metric tons of rice from Myanmar

Sri Lanka is to import 20,000 metric tons of rice from Myanmar, the Government said today.

The Government said that approval had been given by the Cabinet on 24th September, 2021 to import 100,000 metric tons of rice.

The decision was taken to ensure there is sufficient buffer stocks of rice and no shortage.

Accordingly, a proposal made by the Minister of Trade to import 20,000 metric tons of rice from Myanmar on the basis of a Government to Government agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Government of Myanmar, has now been approved.

The rice will be imported at a cost of USD 460 per metric ton by the Government of Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)

Sri Lankans overseas urged not to return

Sri Lankans residing overseas have been urged not to return to Sri Lanka until the coronavirus threat is over, the President’s office said. Sri Lankan man dies of coronavirus in Switzerland
