More Lankans reach Australia

Cocos Islands residents fear a large loss of life if Australia-bound Tamil asylum seekers continue their ploy of sailing direct from Sri Lanka. IGP promotes 146 cops

Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K Illangakoon has promoted 146 police constables to the rank of police sergeants with effect from 2009, the police media unit said today. The constables were promoted after they had filed fundamental rights petitions in court saying they had faced injustice by not being promoted. After considering their petitions filed in court last year the IGP has decided to promote them with effect from 2009.2.15, the police media unit said.
