SJB decides to close door on UNP as long as RW is leader

By Easwaran Rutnam

The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has decided to close its doors on the United National Party (UNP) as long as Ranil Wickremesinghe remains party leader.

SJB Working Committee member Rehan Jayawickrama said that the UNP must appoint a new leader.

Jayawickrama said that the SJB Working Committee has repeatedly emphasized that as long as Ranil Wickremesinghe is the UNP leader the SJB will not look to form a coalition with the UNP.

The SJB Working Committee member expressed these views during a Daily Mirror LIVE discussion held yesterday.

UNP Working Committee member Dinouk Colombage also participated in the discussion.

Jayawickrama urged Colombage to work towards appointing a new leader in the UNP so the two opposition political parties can work together to defeat the government.

Colombage said the UNP is in transition and it had decided to continue with Wickremesinghe as the party leader while the UNP undergoes a restructuring process.

He also said that the opposition must stop the “blame game” and start looking at addressing key issues faced by the public. (Courtesy Daily Mirror)

  1. This fellow Rehan Jayawickrama is another thug in the making.

Rehan Jayawickrama your beloved SJB still has to learn that governance skills don’t happen overnight and winning an election without those skills are useless. Elections are not a popularity contest.

You lot were and still are so politically immature that you didn’t see that the Rajapaksa family was using Dayan Jayatilleka to split the opposition to clear the path towards their 2/3 majority win. Mangala was correct when he called you lot yet another version of SLPP I call you lot SLPP lite.

Your party leader was dumb enough to jump the gun and demand for party leadership prematurely disrespecting Karu Jayasuriya and denying him a chance at running for President.

Karu Jayasuriya was the correct choice the UNP should have made at the time and if so we wouldn’t have a 2/3 majority SLPP government today.

You can hate Ranil Wickremesinghe for whatever personal reasons you have but there is no denying the skills he singlehandedly bring to the table that no one in Sri Lankan politics currently around understand or are able to match.

    M. A. Sumanthiran is another gentleman who understands constitutional governance and will definitely be allied with Ranil and the UNP simply because he knows Ranil understands constitutional governance and has the appropriate approach Sri Lanka needs at this critical time.

    • Dear Sunil,

It does not matter if you are UNP. SLPP, SLFP, SJB, JVP or TNA leaders. You all are South Asians and your ability to think is limited. Let me say it again, You have not evolved to think better than Chinese, Russians, South East Asians, Japanese, and westerners. The way you treat your intellectuals is a clear indication of your progress in human evolution. Your ability to think is dull as your dark skin. In other words, your hearts and minds are darker than your skin colour. I rest my case.
