UK, US and Australia launch pact to counter China

The UK, US and Australia have announced a special security pact to share advanced defence technologies, in an effort to counter China.

The partnership will enable Australia to build nuclear-powered submarines for the first time.

The pact, to be known as Aukus, will also cover artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and cyber.

The three countries are worried about China’s growing power and military presence in the Indo-Pacific.

As a result of the pact, Australia has scrapped a deal to build French-designed submarines.

France won a A$50bn (€31bn; £27bn) contract to build 12 submarines for the Australian Navy in 2016. The deal was Australia’s largest-ever defence contract.

However, the project was hit with delays largely because of Canberra’s requirement that many components be sourced locally.

On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison issued a joint statement on the launch of the new security partnership, labelled Aukus.

“As the first initiative under Aukus… we commit to a shared ambition to support Australia in acquiring nuclear-powered submarines for the Royal Australian Navy,” the statement said.

“This capability will promote stability in the Indo-Pacific and will be deployed in support of our shared values and interests,” it said.

The leaders said the aim was to “bring an Australian capability into service at the earliest achievable date”, adding: “Australia remains committed to fulfilling all of its obligations as a non-nuclear weapons state.”

It went on to say that the defence pact would also focus on cyber capabilities, artificial intelligence and “additional undersea capabilities”. (Courtesy BBC)

  1. Western militaristic Imperialism still continues .. now they are coming back to cause war & destruction is Asia. The stupid Asian nations must get together to counter these threats cloaked as protection of democracy against Red China. We have seen the democracy project in Iraq & Afghanistan not least the dictators backed by the west and the destruction to peace. The UK and USA have no business in the ‘South China Sea’ & the name on the Tin says it all. Can you imagine the outrage if Russia & China wanted to Equip Venezuela with Nuclear Subs for protection (Which that nation deserves). This Axis of evil must be stopped.

    • Well said… Asia has been multiplying foolishness and they are in billions, especially in South Asia. I do not think we have the time and resources to re-educate billions of Asians. in 2015, I have requested funding from the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka to re-educate the people in South Asia by producing movies and songs, but the Chinese Embassy has not responded. The human race has come to a deadlock, nobody listens. Therefore, nuclear war is inevitable.

    • Currently, average Australians are paying a high price for turning a blind eye to their imcompetent leaders. I had a solution for the Australian farmers and refugees. Regrettably, the Australian Political elites refused to listen my strategy but continuing to isolate me. Likewise, the South Asian leaders also do the same. They will never listen to me unless western countries recognise me. South Asia fought against western imperialism, today it is a big fan of the Western powers. It has completely lost its foundation which was built by Gandhi. South Asia is a region without a foundation, anybody can demolish it by shaking it.

Currently, the Australian Farmers are devastated, because they do not have enough farmworkers due to the pandemic. I had a solution, but the government adamantly refused to listen. Since the late 1990s, I have been asking the governments to use refugees in the agriculture sector until their cases have been finalised, instead of locking up in detention centres. However, the ministers have been ignoring me and locking up the refugees in detention centres while the Australian Agriculture sector needs workers. Unfortunately, the politicians have been recklessly wasting the taxpayers’ money and giving unnecessary heartaches to refugees, especially to the children.

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Save the Children and GetUp published a report in 2019 titled ‘At What Cost?’ The report found that offshore detention and processing cost around $9 billion between 2016 and 2020. According to the Refugee Council of Australia report (March 2019), the taxpayers are paying more than $573,000 per year to hold an asylum seeker in offshore detention; more than $346,000 to hold an asylum seeker in detention in Australia. Costing more than $103,343 for an asylum seeker to live in community detention in Australia, and $10,221 for an asylum seeker to live in the community on a bridging visa while their claim is processed.

  2. Sad day for humanity. One step closer to destroy humanity and the world. The Five Eyes countries will not allow others to dominate the world. It has to be the Five Eyes or nobody. Indians are not wise enough to understand the reality. Sadly, in the 18th century Britain deported convicts, but today it is equipping convicts with Nuclear capability.
