Number of people infected with Delta in Sri Lanka spirals

The number of people infected with the Delta variant in Sri Lanka has begun to spiral, going beyond 60 today.
The Ministry of Health said that another 30 people were detected with the variant in 14 areas.
The Delta variant was initially detected only in the Dematagoda area.
However, according to the Health Ministry, people infected with the Covid variant have now been detected in Kotte, Kolonnawa, Angoda, Nawagamuwa, Mahabage, Katunayaka, Negombo, Ratmalana, Beruwala, Galle, Matara, Dambulla, Vavuniya and Mullaithivu.
The Ministry of Health said that the latest cases has taken the number of people infected with Delta in Sri Lanka to 68.
Health experts had earlier warned that the viral load is roughly 1,000 times higher in people infected with the Delta variant than those infected with the original coronavirus strain.
Dr. Chandima Jeewandara of the Sri Jayewardenepura University said that based on the study conducted in China superspreading events are likely to infect more people. (Colombo Gazette)
