Significant increase in attempts to violate inter-province travel ban

A significant increase has been observed in attempts to violate the inter-province travel ban during the islandwide travel restriction that has been enforced in Sri Lanka due to the coronavirus situation, the Police said.

Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said vehicles are continuously being inspected at the 14 entry/exit points of the Western province during this period.

He said 6003 vehicles were inspected yesterday, during which 105 people in 61 vehicles had attempted to violate the inter-province travel ban.

The suspects had been warned and turned away by the Police personnel at the checkpoints.

The Police Spokesman said despite some being turned away over the offence, others have been arrested, with legal action being filed against them and their vehicles also being seized.

DIG Ajith Rohana urged the public to refrain from attempting to violate the restrictions imposed with regard to the travel ban. (Colombo Gazette)
