Fishing allowed to recommence in the Negombo lagoon

Fishing has been allowed to recommence in the Negombo lagoon, the Fisheries Ministry said today.

The Department of Fisheries had suspended fishing in the lagoon three weeks ago.

However, State Minister of Fisheries Kanchana Wijesekera said that fishing in the lagoon has been permitted from today.

Fishing in the lagoon and along the coast in Negombo had been banned following the fire on the MV X-Press Pearl.

Wijesekera noted that fishing will not be permitted in some areas until a scan, clearing and cleanup is competed. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. The clearance needs to be “signed off “ by a reputable agency ( MEPA). A clearance issued for the sake of expediency by a minister should not reassure anyone. Nobody should eat any marine products until they have been tested and certified fit for human consumption.
