Voyage data recorder of MV X-Press Pearl to be recovered

A search operation will be carried out to locate the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) of the MV X-Press Pearl ship, officials said.

Officials said that the VDR will be used to determine conversations the ship captain had with others before and when the fire on the ship erupted.

A criminal investigation is currently underway over the fire with the captain and crew of the vessel prevented from leaving Sri Lanka.

Colombo Port Harbour Master Captain Nirmal Silva said that Sri Lanka was informed of the dangerous goods on the ship.

The authorities also denied claims that the ship was denied entry to the ports in Qatar and India.

Ports and Shipping Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena said the ship had docked in Dubai, Qatar and then India before arriving in Sri Lanka.

Captain Nirmal Silva said that a list of the goods on the ship was provided to the Colombo Port and the dangerous goods were among items permitted in any port.

He also said that Sri Lanka was informed of a leak in some cargo only after the ship had entered Sri Lankan waters and was anchored outside the port.

Silva said that the leak was not one which would force Sri Lanka to prevent a ship from entering Sri Lankan waters.

“It was not a condition which warrants denial entry,” he said.

It is believed that the fire was ignited as a result of the leak in the cargo which then spread across the vessel.

With the ship now mostly underwater there are fears of an oil spill.

However, Captain Nirmal Silva said that there is a suspicion that most of the oil may have burned in the fire.

He said the authorities are on standby in the event there is oil in the ship and if it leaks into the ocean.

Asked why the oil was not pumped out of the ship as soon as the fire broke out, Captain Nirmal Silva said that the conditions at the time, including the weather, prevented a ship-to-ship oil transfer.

  1. India did not allow the MV X-Press Pearl vessel, but Sri Lanka did. Who knows the deal reached by corrupt politicians? The President asked the Navy to tow the ship into international waters. My question is, why did Sri Lanka allow the ship within its borders? The truth is, corrupt politicians will not tell the truth.

  2. HE. THE PRESIDENT SHOULD KINDLY TAKE STERN ACTION ON THIS DISASTER AND FIND OUT THE TRUTH BEHIND THIS GREAT DISASTER THAT HAS PUT OUR “MAATHRUBOOMIYA” IN GREAT PERIL.
HE. GOTABAYA RAJAPAKSA IS THE ONLY LEADER IN THE HISTORY OF SRI LANKA WHO CAN PUT AN END TO THE MISERY OF CORRUPTION THAT OUR “MAATHRUBOOMIYA” HAS BEEN SUBJECTED TO BY UNSCRUPULOUS
POLITICIANS, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, BUSINESS MAGNATES AND OTHERS. PRESIDENT GOTABAYA RJAPAKSA DID WIN THE RUTHLESS WAR AGAINST THE LTTE IN 2009, THE PRESIDENT CAN WIN THIS WAR AGAINST CORRUPTION TOO, YOUR EXCELLENCY SIR.
This does not happen as a result of a mistake. This only happens because of corruption. Take a look at the “worst marine environmental “disaster,” created by these officials and the catastrophe facing our people.
How did the Port Authority staff who allowed this MV X-Press Pearl ship to get close to Colombo Habour allow the ship to come close to the port when they saw / noticed the “smoke” without taking proper action? The smoke was not ordinary smoke, but a golden yellow coloured smoke as stated by officials and the MEPA General Manger who along other officials had followed the movements of this vessel when it was away from our 12 miles territory. nirmal silva is the habour master and he has evaded facing the mainstream tv channels to answer this question. It seems that the Habour Master, MEPA, CEA and relevant government ministries had even allowed the oil tanker DIAMOND EXPRESS to “SLIP” away from our hold without getting the full compensation due to Sri lanka legitimately.
These government officials who are trustees of our SEAS and MARINE ENVIRONMENT must BE MADE TO take full responsibility for this great catastrophe. They are now trying to cover up the truth by deceiving the president. In a discusion aired by a popular TV station yesterday, General Manager Dr. B.P. Terney Pradeep Kumara was bluffing through ththe responsibilities of the Marine Enviornment Prevention Authority (MEPA), when questions by the expert panel. Another participant clearly expained the failure of the HABOUR MASTER’S RESPONSIBILITY AS THE MAIN REASON FOR THIS DISASTER. Could it be the act of politicians to help these government employees MAKE DECEPTIVE STATEMENTS to the media to cover themselves? Maybe with them the shipping agent is trying to cover it up or wipe it under the “carpet”. The government must take strong decisions in this matter to save the country. Do not allow these government officials to “DUPE’ you and get out of their responsibilty/ “FAILURES” that has been proved beyond doubt, your Excellency. They are trying to excape by misleading the President which will finally discredit the President finally in the face of the NATION. A Presidential Commission can be an answer to prevent such a sitution.
In this case the President must save our country, “MAATHRUBOOMIYA” from such a catastrophe in the future which can happen due to the possibility of “CORRUPT” officials working hand in hand with multinational corporations for the benefit of a few million dollars for their personal gain. PATRIOTS DO NOT FEAR CARRYING THE FLAG OF VICTORY OF THIS GOVERNMENT TO THE END AND WILL STAND UP AND CONTINUE TELLING THE TRUTH UNTILL IT IS HEARD.
