Several people have been arrested for violating an ID system strictly enforced since yesterday (Monday) to travel on the road.
Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said a special operation was conducted in the Western Province yesterday to monitor those violating the National Identity Card (NIC) system.
He said a total of 1480 people had been inspected, out of which 141 were arrested for violating the NIC system.
DIG Ajith Rohana urged the public to adhere to the NIC system and venture outdoors only for essential requirements.
He further reminded the public to also strictly follow the health guidelines when leaving their homes.
The National Identity Card system was reintroduced due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus in Sri Lanka.
Apart from the ID system, a travel ban was also announced on some days to curtail the spread of the virus. (Colombo Gazette)
