PM insists final phase of war was launched to free civilians

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today insisted that the final phase of the war was launched against the LTTE to free trapped civilians.

Making a special statement in Parliament to mark the anniversary since the defeat of the LTTE in 2019 May 18, the Prime Minister recalled the contributions made by the military commanders at the time, including former Army Commander and now opposition Parliamentarian Sarath Fonseka.

He said the military targeted the LTTE during the final phase of the war to free trapped civilians.

The Prime Minister also rejected war crimes allegations raised against the military. (Colombo Gazette)
