A teen has been arrested in Gampola for allegedly spreading fake news on social media, the Police said today.
Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said that the 19-year-old was arrested in Kahatapitiya in Gampola.
He had used social media to spread fake news and misinformation, the Police Spokesman said.
The Police said that he was arrested following information provided by the Police intelligence unit.
DIG Ajith Rohana said that the mobile phone used by the suspect was seized following the arrest.
The Gampola Police is conducting further investigations.
DIG Ajith Rohana said that verified news can be spread on social media but not fake news.
He said that misleading the public or attempting to create disharmony among the communities using social media is a punishable offence under local laws. (Colombo Gazette)
