Cabinet approves proposal to ban burqa

The proposed ban on all face coverings, including the burqa, has been approved by the Cabinet.

Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara made the announcement during the post-Cabinet media briefing held today.

Minister Weerasekara had proposed a ban on the burqa and niqab on 13th March.

He had signed the cabinet paper and had handed it over to the Cabinet for approval.

A ban was proposed on the burqa and niqab based on concerns over national security.

However, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved a ban not only on the burqa and niqab, but on all face and head coverings. (Colombo Gazette)
