The Government has decided to ban the import of palm oil to Sri Lanka.
The President’s Media Division (PMD) said a decree in this regard was issued by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today.
The PMD further said the ban comes into immediate effect.
In February, President Rajapaksa ordered officials to take measures to immediately halt palm cultivation in the country.
The order was issued during a meeting with the Galle District Development Committee, after the public from the area had informed him of the harm caused to the environment due to the cultivation of palm oil.
They had pointed out that it had led to a severe water shortage in the area. (Colombo Gazette)
