Court rejects Ranjan’s appeal over Parliament seat

The Court of Appeal today rejected a writ application filed by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Ranjan Ramanayake pertaining to his Parliament seat.

The writ application had been filed by MP Ramanayake?s lawyers requesting to prevent the MP from being removed as a Parliamentarian.

An issue arose with regard to MP Ramanayake?s Parliament seat after he was convicted over charges of contempt of court.

The Supreme Court?sentenced MP Ramanayake?to four years rigorous imprisonment over the charges, and he remains imprisoned at the Angunukolapelessa prison at present.

Following his sentencing, Attorney General Dappula de Livera informed the Secretary General of Parliament that Ranjan?Ramanayake?s seat in Parliament has become vacant.

Earlier in March (10), Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena?maintained his stand?with regard to imprisoned MP Ramanayake?s seat in parliament.

He informed Parliament that a decision cannot be taken on the matter, until the Court issues a verdict. (Colombo Gazette)
