The Police have unearthed a major racket involving the theft of three-wheelers.
Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said four three-wheeler thefts were reported in the Kuruwita, Eheliyagoda, Kelaniya, and Pallekele areas yesterday.
He said the Police have received reports that the thefts were being carried out by organized gangs and people addicted to drugs.
DIG Ajith Rohana said special operations are being conducted with regard to stolen three-wheelers and motorcycles.
He said information has been received that organized criminals are stealing the vehicles and handing it over to certain individuals in Colombo, especially Panchikawatte and Maradana areas, and outside Colombo as well.
The Police Spokesman said those taking over the vehicles are also part of the vehicle racket.
DIG Ajith Rohana warned that anyone found with a stolen vehicle without valid documents will be deemed to have stolen the vehicles themselves.
He said the Police will conduct special operations on the identified locations and individuals said to be taking over stolen vehicles, despite knowing it has been stolen.
DIG Rohana said those found with stolen vehicles can be sentenced up to three years rigorous imprisonment.
