Eight (08) Thailand nationals have been arrested on charges of violating visa conditions.
The Police said three women and five men were found to have been overstaying in Sri Lanka in St. Anthony’s Mawatha in Colombo 03 without valid visa documents.
They were arrested following a search warrant obtained from the Fort Magistrate’s Court.
The suspects will be produced before the Fort Magistrate’s Court today.
Meanwhile, nine other foreign nationals were also arrested during a special operation conducted by the Police yesterday.
The Police said three Nigerians, four Maldivians and two Indians were arrested in Mt. Lavinia, Moratuwa, Dehiwala, Slave Island and Grandpass Police areas for violating visa regulations.
Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the special operation was conducted after the Police was alerted on Nigerians conducting various online scams, using social media, text messages, and emails, in Sri Lanka.
Earlier, eight suspects, including four Nigerians were arrested in February for defrauding Rs. 1.7 million via an online scam.
In January, three individuals, including a Nigerian were remanded on charges of defrauding a Sri Lankan living in France via email.
The Police had cautioned the public of an online scam operated by Nigerians and Chinese nationals in September 2020. (Colombo Gazette)
