Fake friend arrested for misleading people over the phone

A suspect has been arrested for misleading people over the phone by claiming he is a friend and obtaining money.

The 31-year-old suspect was arrested by the Madampe Police after it was revealed he had telephoned several people claiming he is a friend of a close friend or relative.

According to the Police, the suspect had then obtained money from those he had telephoned saying it was required to meet an urgent need.

Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the suspect makes the telephone calls saying he is known to a friend or relative the victim has not been in touch with for a long period of time.

He then gives a bank account to transfer money saying it is required for an emergency and cuts the line.

Among those who he had telephoned was a doctor who was asked to transfer Rs. 100,000 to a bank account.

The doctor had later made the transfer before realising he had been misled.

DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspect was found to have defrauded over ten people. (Colombo Gazette)
