Expert committee to draft new family law

An expert committee is to draft a new family law to cover divorce, annulment, separation child custody and division of property.

The Government said that marriage, divorce, separation and the relating procedures are contained in the Marriage Registration Ordinance No. 19 of 1907 and in the Civil Procedure Code.

The Government said that the need to amend the provisions of the Ordinance to suit the present has been identified.

Accordingly the Cabinet has approved a proposal presented by the Minister
of Justice to study the legal situation prevailing in other countries on family law.

A committee with expert knowledge will study the subject and draft a detailed Family Law Act covering all areas. (Colombo Gazette)

Tri-lingual human rights action plan goes online

The government has made available the National Human Rights Action Plan in all three languages online, officials said today.
