TNA reiterates demand for opposition leader post

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) yesterday reiterated its stand for the opposition leader post as the new Parliament met for the first time. The TNA Parliamentary Group convened yesterday and TNA leader R. Sampanthan was elected as the TNA?s Parliamentary Group Leader at this meeting. It was also decided that Sampanthan should be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. No Sri Lankan casualties in Saudi Arabia fire

There are no Sri Lankan casualties as a result of the deadly fire at a?residential complex in Khobar city in Saudi Arabia. New Parliament meets, Karu elected Speaker

The new Parliament convened today and United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya was elected as the new Speaker. Jayasuriya was elected to the post unanimously after his name was proposed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and seconded by Sri Lanka Freedom Party member Nimal Siripala de Silva.
