The Cabinet had extensive discussions on holding Provincial Council elections at the earliest possible date, Cabinet co-spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said today.
He said that a proposal on holding the Provincial Council elections was put forward by Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Janaka Bandara Tennakoon.
“Cabinet had extensive discussions on the Provincial Council elections and 13th Amendment,” he said.
He said that prior to 2015 the then Government had wide ranging discussions on the electoral system.
The Minister said that the former Government however continued to postpone elections.
Rambukwella said that Cabinet had decided to hold meetings with political party leaders on the matter.
He said that the Cabinet will later have further discussions on the matter and reach a final decision. (Colombo Gazette)
