Seven Lankans detained in Mauritius after being smuggled abroad

A group of Sri Lankans have been detained in Mauritius after they were duped by human smugglers. Sri Lanka?s High Commissioner to Seychelles, Tikiri Herath Gunathilaka said that the Sri Lankans had paid huge sums of money and travelled to Mauritius expecting employment. However he said the Sri Lankans were instead arrested on the basis that they did not have valid documents to enter the country. Gunathilaka said that steps are now being taken to deport the seven Sri Lankans back to Sri Lanka.

Two women arrested at BIA for attempting to smuggle gold

The Police Narcotics Bureau arrested two women at the?Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while they attempted to smuggle gold into the country. The two Sri Lankan women had arrived from Singapore and had in their possession 1.1kg of gold. The gold is estimated to be worth around Rs 10 million, officials said. Further investigations are underway. (Colombo Gazette)

Former Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan and IP further remanded

Former Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan and Inspector of Police (IP) Neomal Rangajeewa, who were arrested over the 2012 Welikada Prison riot, have been further remanded.
