Families of coronavirus victims must pay for coffins

Families of coronavirus victims must pay for the coffins, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi informed Parliament today.

Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahuman said that he was made to understand one family had to pay Rs. 58,000 for a coffin.

Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said that the normal procedure is that families of the victims can pick their own coffins and must pay for it.

However, she said that if a family faces any difficulty the Government will look for a sponsor.

“At the moment it is the family that selects the coffin and pays for it. If they cant pay we will speak to others including sponsors and get help,” she said.

She also said that a full investigation is underway to detect the main source behind the Brandix Minuwangoda coronavirus cluster.

The Minister said that the Police is conducting a criminal probe into the cluster. (Colombo Gazette)


  1. Government expects coronavirus to be around for three years so Government should introduce and help SAMURDHI recipients to start-up small scale coffin making which Government can then purchase. It is fair enough for relatives of the departed to pay for funeral expenses. However, involving the masses would be more transparent that the costs involved are not over-estimated. Over to you Mr President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
